ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia University head baseball coach Mark "Lunch" McKenzie has announced that Hogan Jackson (Oakdale, Minn.) of Tartan High School has signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Golden Bears in the 2010 season. Jackson is a right handed pitcher and corner infielder that was recently named a 2009 Pioneer Press All-State selection.
"We are excited to land a player of Hogan's caliber and he will have an opportunity to play immediately as a pitcher and a corner infielder as a two-way player," McKenzie commented. "Hogan has good power at the plate with a fastball in the mid to upper 80's. We are looking forward to working with Hogan to see him develop into his full potential as a Golden Bear."
On the mound in 2009, the six-foot, 180-pound right hander struck out 61 over 54.2 innings while compiling a 7-1 record with a 2.32 earned run average. At the plate, he hit .418 with eight home runs and 28 RBI.
In his prep career as a pitcher, Jackson struck out 110 batters while amassing a 15-3 record on the hill. He was selected to play in the 2009 Lions All-Star Series along with fellow CU recruit Patrick Rydeen.
Jackson helped the Titans to a 19-5 overall record and a 14-2 mark in the Classic Suburban. In addition to earning All-State honors, he was named Tartan's Most Valuable Pitcher, was a two-time Classic Suburban All-Conference pick and helped his team to back-to-back Classic Suburban Conference Championships.
Jackson's addition brings CU's 2010 recruiting class to 11 student-athletes for next season including six pitchers.
Concordia baseball is no stranger to two-way stars from Tartan High School, as the program just had former Titan Jake Schmidt drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 2009 MLB Amateur Draft. Jackson will join forces with Tartan graduate Jon Stockton, who still holds the THS record for walks in a season (25) before breaking the CU single season walks record in 2009 (42).
